Huh?

Fiona brought home this paper the other night. I'm... confused. Someone expain this to me?

What are they teaching kids in Sunday School these days?

As a side note, my original (if somewhat crude) title for this post was, "WTFWJD?"

I've also now come across this: http://lordikablog.blogspot.com/2008/04/without-her-permission.html ...which seems to make sense. Mostly. It's still not self-evident if you just see the paper, though.

Wow, how in the world did you find that info? It does explain a lot, but I'm a little confused on how the story would make sense to 5 year olds...

We have a missionary colleague in Spain who has a deliverance ministry. He basically helps people clean up their lives. He claims he is the Lord's garbage man. I guess that is about the same as being a dust pan.

Well, on the one hand, there's nothing wrong per se with taking an illustration from everyday life. Jesus did that all the time. So did Paul.

OTOH, this paper is fairly characteristic of the sort of thing you tend to get when Sunday School materials are written from scratch out of the writer's head, or other extrabiblical sources, rather than from actual passages of scripture. If that's what's going on, it's a cause for concern.

I'm sure the dustpan made sense to the person who wrote the lesson, but whether it communicates is another matter. If you only know the Bible, it isn't obvious what the dustpan is supposed to be illustrating.

There is some question then whether the dustpan is really an illustration here, or whether it's more like the main lesson point. Did the lesson come from the Bible and then draw on the dustpan illustration to reinforce the point, or did the lesson come from the dustpan and slap on a couple of tangentially related Bible references as an afterthought? Not having been there for the lesson, I can't evaluate that reliably, but it's a question very much worth asking, IMO.

Oh, one other thing: there are two basic kinds of (effective) illustrations: those that serve to help explain a point so it can be understood, and those that serve as a memory aid so that the point can be remembered. (Of course, there are also ones that do both, or neither.) I'm pretty sure this one can't really be in the first category, so presumably it's supposed to be a memory aid.

I think it would be a fun T-shirt, in an out-of-left-field sort of way.

Jonadab, I don't know who you're working with, but this is NOT characteristic of the sort of thing I get when making up Sunday school materials out of my head.

But then again, I am a professional curriculum writer, so maybe I'm just better at it.
